GA4 Spam Referral Links – potentially ongoing

Starting around Mid February, websites around the world began to see issues with their google analytics – more particularly with large spikes in the numbers of referral traffic. You will see these as spikes /anomalies in your Analytics reports. The issue seems to be more under control in March but there are still reports of some sites seeing these issues.

The perpetrators are hitting the GA4 tags directly, so not visiting websites. There is a suggestion that this increase in spam referrals might impact your sites’ search rankings. If you see a drop in rankings, or would like to filter out the anomalies, then you can implement the Google Tag Manager (GTM) solution suggested below.

This LinkedIn post has details of the Google Tag Manager changes which currently seem to be the best way to deal with this. To implement that solution you will need to have your GA4 tag set up in GTM as described here. There is also a dedicated Google forum thread here
